Gold. Gold Mining. Mining Camps. Camp Followers. Following Highway 49.
If you're interested in the California Gold Rush Country, you've come to the right place, 'cause
the virtual tour starts here. Travel along Highway 49 and visit the old mining camps, see the
sights and learn their history, all without leaving the comfort of your desktop. And if you're
planning on visiting the Gold Country, you'll find a plethora of valuable information amongst
these pages. The sights to see, the places to stay, what to do, and how to get there.
The information contained within these pages is basically an extended, virtual edition of my
book, The California Gold Rush: Highway 49 Revisited. Thus, these pages somewhat follow the same
format. The Introduction gives a brief history of the discovery of gold in California, and the
consequences of that discovery. The Mining Camps provide a detailed history of how the gold camps
were founded, by whom, and how they prospered. Also included in this section is information that
Gold Country travelers will find useful. The Gold Rush Players refer to some of the important
figures of the Gold Rush, and provides a brief biography of those early pioneers.
